Market Trends: Pork Continues to Spike, Bringing Average Wholesale Up

Market Overview
The average Wholesale Price Index (+4.41%) was up significantly this week, but most of the gains were isolated to a few categories.
The biggest movers were Beef Strip Loin (+13.79%), Pork Shoulder (+11.60%), and Pork Loin (5.85%). There were also smaller gains in Fresh Bell Pepper (+3.42%), Fresh Potatoes (+1.99%), Cod (+1.12%), Shell Eggs (+1.00%), and Chicken Wings (+0.62%).
The rest of the categories decreased but not enough to outweigh the gains we saw. Decreases were led by Fresh Lettuce (-3.54%) and Ground Beef (-1.80%). There were also smaller drops in Fresh Onion (-0.92%) and Chicken Breast (-0.67%).
Commodity saw a smaller increase (+0.78%) with 7 categories up and 5 down. The most notable moves in commodity were a spike in Fresh Onion (+22.06%) and a drop in Fresh Bell Pepper (-11.34%). We expect the overall Wholesale market to be mixed next week with the average mostly flat.

Category Trends
Ground Beef
As expected, there was a decrease in wholesale (-1.80%). Commodity (-2.07%) was also down, expect Wholesale to be mostly flat next week.
Shell Eggs
Wholesale (+0.72%) rose slightly while Commodity (+4.44%) saw a moderate jump. Expect wholesale prices to be up next week.
Pork Loin
Wholesale (+5.85%) saw a bump in prices while Commodity (+2.18%) saw a more moderate increase. Expect prices to be flat to slightly down next week.
Pork Shoulder
Wholesale (+11.60%) saw a big spike while Commodity (+1.21%) only had a slight bump. Expect Wholesale to be flat to down next week.
Fresh Lettuce
Wholesale (-3.54%) continued its downward slide while Commodity (-1.34%) had a smaller decrease. Expect prices to be slightly up next week.
Fresh Potatoes
Both Wholesale (+1.99%) and Commodity (+4.86%) continued to see increases. Unless the trend in Commodity reverses, expect Wholesale prices to continue to increase.
Chicken Breast
Wholesale (-0.67%) was mostly flat, while Commodity (-2.16%) dropped moderately. Expect Wholesale prices to be mostly flat to slightly down next week.
Fresh Bell Pepper
Wholesale (+3.42%) saw a moderate jump while Commodity (-11.34%) saw a huge drop. Wholesale prices are likely to be significantly down next week.
Fresh Onion
Wholesale (-0.92%) was mostly flat while Commodity (+22.06%) saw a huge increase. Expect Wholesale prices to be up at least moderately next week.
Beef Strip Loin
Wholesale (+13.79%) saw a huge spice while Commodity (+2.47%) only had a moderate bump. Expect Wholesale prices to be down next week.
Chicken Wing
Wholesale (+0.62%) was mostly flat while Commodity (-5.89%) was down. Expect Wholesale to be down next week.
Cod
