Market Trends: Wholesale Beef Strip Loin Leads Price Increases, Average Wholesale up 1.83%

Get to know how food prices have changed and where they are going with your Market Trends Report. Each week we’ll show you how both Wholesale and Commodity prices have changed. We’ll also include an analysis of how we expect Wholesale prices to change over the coming weeks to help you make the best purchasing decisions, all for free.

Market Overview

Average Commodity prices stayed flat (+0.1%) and while Average Wholesale prices saw another increase (+1.83%). Eight of 11 Wholesale categories saw increases with both Meats and Produce going more up than down.

Beef Strip Loin continued to lead the Wholesale price increases (+8.08%). Fresh Potatoes (+6.61%) and Fresh Lettuce (+5.24%) were the two other big gainers. Wholesale prices in Ground Beef (+0.26%), Chicken Breast (+0.31%), and Chicken Wings (+0.10%) didn’t go up much, but the higher average $/lb helped drive up the overall average Wholesale price.

Wholesale Pork prices were down across the board, with Loin down 3.49% and Shoulder down 1.80%. The only other category that saw a Wholesale price drop was Fresh Bell Pepper (-6.61%).

While average Commodity prices were flat (+0.10%), we expect continued distribution challenges and increased demand to drive average Wholesale prices disproportionately higher.

Category Trends

Ground Beef

Both Commodity (-0.47%) and Wholesale (+0.26%) stayed relatively flat. We expect prices will be flat to up in coming weeks.

Shell Eggs

Commodity (-5.32%) and Wholesale (+2.71%) are headed in different directions. Expect Wholesale to flatten out unless Commodity increases.

Pork Loin

Wholesale (-3.49%) got a downward push from last week's Commodity drop. But Commodity is up (+8.35%) this week so look for Wholesale to follow.

Pork Shoulder

As expected, Wholesale came down (-1.80%) after last week's Commodity decrease. Commodity is down again this week (-1.03%) so look for Wholesale to be flat to down next week.

Fresh Lettuce

Wholesale went up (+5.24%) instead of down, even as Commodity went down another 6.69%. Even if Wholesale goes up again next week, it should have some downward pressure from Commodity trends.

Fresh Potatoes

Wholesale popped 6.61% following last week's big Commodity increase. Commodity is down 4.59% this week. Expect Wholesale to only be flat to slightly up next week.

Chicken Breast

Significant drop in Commodity (-11.94%) keeps Wholesale (+0.31%) from seeing the expected increase this week. Look for Wholesale to be pulled down next week.

Fresh Bell Pepper

Wholesale dropped as expected (-6.61%) and a big Commodity drop (-21.57%) will bring Wholesale even lower in the future.

Fresh Onion

Commodity continued up (+6.63%) and Wholesale followed (+1.66%). Wholesale should continue up next week.

Beef Striploin

Commodity up again (+4.60%) and Wholesale continues to increase disproportionately (+8.08%). We believe the trend will continue.

Chicken Wing

We've added another one! Commodity prices have stayed flat for the past few months with some slight variations in Wholesale. Slight Wholesale increase last week (+0.36%) and we expect that to continue up.
