Market Overview
Average Wholesale and Commodity prices remain pretty flat in our first full week of 2022, with less than 1% change in both. In certain categories, Commodity average prices are trending up, so we may see Wholesale following in the weeks to come. Here’s the biggest ups and downs.
Biggest percentage decreases in Wholesale prices were Pork Shoulder (-5.3%), Shell Eggs (-1.64%), and Chicken Breast (-.58%). Expect Wholesale prices for Shell Eggs and Chicken Breast to move in the other direction soon, as Commodity is up in both categories.
The big increases in Wholesale prices were Fresh Onion (+3.43%), Ground Beef (3.35%), and Fresh Potato (1.46%). Fresh Onion may continue to go up as Commodity prices have increased even greater, but Ground Beef and Fresh Potato may level again.
This is the first week that the average Commodity price across all categories is up in the last 6 weeks. We’ve seen Wholesale prices move independently of Commodity in the past, but we think that continued increase in the Commodity sector will drive up the bottom in Wholesale.
