Get to know how food prices have changed and where they are going with your Market Trends Report. Each week we’ll show you how both Wholesale and Commodity prices have changed. We’ll also include an analysis of how we expect Wholesale prices to change over the coming weeks to help you make the best purchasing decisions, all for free.

Market Overview

It’s starting to be the same tune each week, with average Wholesales prices (+1.19%) up for the second week in a row. Average Commodity prices were up as well (+0.84%). It’s a mixed bag with proteins and produce, having multiple categories moving up and down.

We see seven categories with average Wholesale prices moving up this week. Fresh Lettuce (+8.29%) leads the way followed by Fresh Bell Peppers (+8.18%), Fresh Onions (+6.96%), Pork Loin (+5.48%), Chicken Wing (+2.43%), Ground Beef (+0.47%), and Beef Strip Loin (+0.86%).

Average Wholesale prices dropped for Pork Shoulder (-11.57%), Fresh Potatoes (-5.65%), Chicken Breast (-1.70%), and Shell Eggs (-.88%).

With average Commodity prices up this week and continued upward pressure from outside forces look for Wholesale prices to continue the march up in most categories.

Category Trends

Ground Beef

Wholesale stayed relatively flat (+0.47%) while Commodity took another big dip (-4.32%). Should see Wholesale trend down in coming weeks.

Shell Eggs

Wholesale (-0.88%) dropped slightly but a bigger drop in Commodity (-7.58%) should push Wholesale prices down further next week.

Pork Loin

Wholesale (+5.48%) spiked unexpectedly, especially with Commodity staying completely flat. Would expect Wholesale to flatten out next week.

Pork Shoulder

Big drop in Wholesale (-11.57%) indicates other factors than just Commodity which was flat. Unless Commodity drops next week, would expect Wholesale to come back up.

Fresh Lettuce

As expected, Wholesale (+8.29%) jumped and with Commodity (+8.07%) up again look for the trends to continue.

Fresh Potatoes

Wholesale (-5.65%) decreased even more than expected. Commodity (+0.31%) remained relatively flat so look for Wholesale to flatten out as well.

Chicken Breast

Less demand for Chicken Breast? Wholesale (-1.70%) dropped even with Commodity (+3.31%) going up again. Would expect Wholesale to bump up with the continued increases in Commodity.

Fresh Bell Pepper

Bump in Commodity (+2.38%) helped push Wholesale (+8.18%) more than expected. Everything is pointing to continued increases.

Fresh Onion

Long-term trend of price increases continue with Wholesale up 6.96% and Commodity up 7.02%. Don't expect this to change anytime soon.

Beef Strip Loin

Wholesale (+0.86%) stayed pretty flat, but the increase in Commodity (+2.10%) should push prices up next week.

Chicken Wing

Must be March Madness! Wholesale bumped up 2.43% even with another drop in Commodity (-2.07%). Demand might keep it up another week, but Wholesale should come back down after that.
